(Adapted from The Washington Post February 19, 1999)
James Earle Deese, who chaired the University of Virginia's Psychology Department from 1972 to 1980, died Feb. 15 1999 at his Charlottesville home. He was 78. Deese joined the University faculty in 1972 as Commonwealth Professor of Psychology after serving for twenty-four years on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University. In 1980, Deese was awarded the Hugh Scott Hamilton Professorship, which he held until he retired to emeritus status in 1990.
A native of Salt Lake City, Deese earned a B.A. in psychology from Chapman College in Orange, Calif., then his doctorate from Indiana University in 1948. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty that year, and rose from assistant professor to full professor and department chair before coming to the University of Virginia.
His professional interests moved from the study of animal learning, to human learning and verbal behavior, through psycholinguistics, to the history of ideas. An accomplished musician, he was an authority on American classical music. He was also a collector of rare books. Deese was a member of the University's Raven Society and won its Raven Award in 1980. He was a kind and generous man, repected by his peers and regarded with affection by his students.
Deese was the author, coauthor or contributor to numerous books, articles, bulletins, and reports.
