SCAPEGOAT
The idea of the scapegoat as one who bears the sins of the community is an ancient concept which appears in the rites of Babylon and survives into modern times. The name comes from the Yon Kippur ceremonies of the Hebrews. Yon Kippur is the day of atonement when the sins of the community are borne into the wilderness by a goat allowing, the people to escape the consequences of misdeeds. The idea was adopted by Christianity where Christ assumed the role of the scapegoat by accepting the sins of the world and suffering punishment for them.
