ON-LINE DISCUSSIONS

Discussion Directions

Each week I will post a question in the Serf Discussion Forum on each of your two reading assignments . You will read each assignment and write a response to the question. After you have written these two journals, you will write a third journal in response to what what another student has written about the assigned readings. Your purpose is to think about the stories and the ideas that people have about them. Let their ideas help generate new thoughts for you. For instructions on how to submit your work, click your mouse on the "Discussion Directions" button above.

WRITING ASSIGNMENTS

Each week you will have a writing assignment that asks you to respond to the content or the or the techniques used in your reading assignment. For example, I may ask you to interpret the theme of a story or to explain a literary device such as symbolism. These assignments may require research using Internet and/or library sources. Proper documentation of your sources is important.

Your responses in the discussion forums allow you to give personal respones to the reading assignments and to share your ideas with others. Your responses may take the form of freewriting exercises; that is, evidence of thought is important and coherence is expected, but mechanical and grammatical correctness are not essential. On the other hand, the weekly reports ask for precise, carefully considered responses and should exhibit careful editing. Your assignment will be submitted to Serf using what Serf calls "Web Query Assignments." For directions on how to submit your work, click on the buttton below.

Web Query Assignments

LENGTH OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS

Each journal you submit to the discussion forums and each web query assignment you submit must be one full computer screen. Specifically this means 20 lines of writing allowing for automatic wordwrap. The average number of words per line is 17, so 17 X 20 = 340 words for each journal and web query assignment.
