The History of Wilton Carpets

As a result of the establishment of the Weavers Guild, the Earl of Pembroke brought several French Huguenot weavers to the town in the early part of the 18th Century. One of these weavers, Antoine Dufosse, invented a loom which produced patterned carpet with a cut pile surface. This process became known as Wilton weave. A patent was granted in 1741, but weavers in England and the Low Countries soon began to copy the process. Although the factories at Wilton could not protect their idea nor trademark their name, the town and factory has benefited from the world-wide recognition of being a center of excellence in carpet-making over the centuries.
